Potentiometric contours are based on water-level measurements collected at 608 wells during the period September 14-October 1, near the end of the wet season. Potentiometric Surface Mapping (1:48000) This series, created to provide e-products (such as GIS coverages) for quick release includes: Maps and digital coverage of unconsolidated and/or bedrock potentiometric surface lines The EZ-Map tool uses simple triangulation to create contours. For some data sets, this may be all you need to create a reasonable looking map.

Until recently, statistical interpolation methods were used to create potentiometric surfaces (water level maps), but they have always been less than ideal near the data boundaries. Taking disparate water level data from varying points in space and creating a set of water levels on a grid requires a number of assumptions that do not always hold up along the boundaries.

The EZ-Map tool uses simple triangulation to create contours. For some data sets, this may be all you need to create a reasonable looking map. However, it will often be necessary to create grid-based maps with smoother contour lines that extend to the edge of the project. Potentiometric Surface Maps. In 2006, the Groundwater Program started mapping the potentiometric surface of the unconsolidated (sand-and-gravel) and consolidated (bedrock) aquifers in the state. These maps show the contour of the water surface in the different aquifers.

The potentiometric surface maps must be updated on an annual basis, and signed & sealed by a qualified groundwater scientist. Those facilities that do not conduct groundwater monitoring should, at a minimum, include a site map that shows ALL monitoring locations.

Water level maps for both confined and unconfined aquifers are typically referred to as potentiometric surface maps. Potentiometric surface or water-level maps are an essential part of any groundwater investigation because they indicate the direction in which groundwater is moving and provide an estimate of the hydraulic gradient, which controls velocity.
