Historically, normal plethysmographic waveforms have been characterized by a sharp systolic peak and prominent dicrotic wave; abnormal waveforms have an absent dicrotic wave, a downslope bowed away from the baseline, flattened systolic peaks, and an equal upslope and downslope time. 1,3 –10 These historic characteristics were the basis for the waveform elements outlined in this study. Acceleration TIME objectively defines waveform acceleration to within four hundredths of a second. The plethysmographic waveform variation (SPVplet) was measured as the difference between maximal and minimal peaks of waveform during the ventilatory cycle, and expressed as a percentage of the signal amplitude during apnoea.

This test can tell you if you have lung damage from exposure to substances in your environment, if you are able to tolerate surgery, and other key pieces of information. plethysmography has been shown to change in relation to flow when the monitor does not employ an auto-gain mode of waveform display [7, 81. Air plethysmography uses a similar principle but based on an air-filled long cuff, which is more convenient but less accurate. Another practical device is mercury-filled strain gauges used to continuously measure circumference of the extremity, e.g. at mid calf. plethysmography (PPG) and impedance plethysmography (IP) signals.

Introduction Respiratory variation in arterial pulse pressure is a reliable predictor of fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated patients with circulatory failure. The main limitation of this method is that it requires an invasive arterial catheter. Both arterial and pulse oximetry plethysmographic waveforms depend on stroke volume. We conducted a prospective study to evaluate the

In the absence of invasive arterial pressure monitoring, ventilation-induced waveform variability of the plethysmographic signal measured from pulse oximetry is … The plethysmographic waveform variation (SPVplet) was measured as the difference between maximal and minimal peaks of waveform during the ventilatory cycle, and expressed as a percentage of the signal amplitude during apnoea. dUp (plet) and dDown (plet) were measured as the distance between the apnoeic plateau and the maximal or minimal plethysmographic systolic waveform, respectively.

Specific features in the plethysmographic waveform can be used to identify normal and abnormal perfusion. We are developing a Doppler strain-imaging technique to measure the local pulsatile expansion and relaxation of tissue analogous to the gross measurement of tissue volume change with conventional plethysmography.

Plethysmographic waveforms provide a reliable in- dicator of global arterial perfusion.

The basic technology behind the pulse oximeter is photoelectric plethysmography, as reported by Hertzman. There are two components of the waveforms: the pulsatile component or AC portion and the static component or DC. Time and frequency domain are two different methods available for plethysmographic waveform analysis. The typical pulse oximeter displays a processed waveform (Figure 23.2B).Since the raw data collected by the device corresponds to light hitting the photodiode, which is inversely related to blood volume, the waveform must be inverted to resemble an arterial pressure waveform.
